Happiness: Claiming What is Rightfully Yours

You have valid reasons for experiencing happiness. You are alive, you are breathing, your brain is functioning. If you are not happy right now (and you are not in mourning), then in one form or another your brain is limiting you emotionally. Use your imagination to enable you to be in the state that you ought to be in.

Here is an effective technique to create joy. Ask yourself: “In what situations or circumstances would I be happy?” Then imagine that this is your reality. “But how can I fool myself?” some ask. That is why we started with the first paragraph. Since you should be happy, if you are not, your brain is playing a trick on you. You will now use your imagination to cancel out this blockage.

So when would you be happy?

“I would be happy if I suddenly became wealthy.” Imagine that you just acquired enormous wealth. Visualize this in detail. Now feel the joy that you would experience. Since the joy of being alive is greater than the joy of wealth, you have a right to do this. And you do have many other things to rejoice about.

“I would be joyous if I wrote a book that sold 50 million copies.” Then imagine that you did. Hear the publisher telling you that you reached this milestone. Influencing a single individual should give you tremendous joy. Use your imagination to claim what is rightfully yours.

“I would be joyous if I were awarded a medal of honor in the presence of a hundred thousand people.” Then do some positive act and visualize the great honors of receiving your medal with everyone you knew present. When you do a positive act, you are entitled to this joy even if no one else knows about your actions. Your imagination is making it easier for you to feel the way you should.

“I would be joyous if I were told I had a serious illness and then was told I had a miraculous recovery.” Imagine the news of your good health (“Great news. You are healthy.”) and appreciate the good health that is already yours. Even a person who is seriously ill can appreciate the news that he has a longer lease on life.

“I would be joyous if I took an I.Q. test and was told that I am a supergenius.” Imagine this and experience joy. You have a right to feel this joy with the miraculous power of your brain even if there are other people with similar intelligence. Overcome your lack of appreciation for the abilities you do have, with your ability to imagine unlimited mental potential.

Some people will love this exercise. Others will find it odd. But remember that millions upon millions of people enjoy fictional stories in books and movies. What we are referring to here is using your imagination to experience valid and realistic joy. Permit yourself to use the unrealistic to learn to enjoy the realistic.
